The Story
THE STORY
The show opens with three characters from Greek mythology (Atlas, Prometheus, Sisyphis) mourning the perils of crossing Zeus’ and his short temper (Zeus’ Romp). Then Mercury, sweeps in to tell how mighty Zeus has punished Aphroditie for her part in starting the Trojan War... she is transformed into a statue.
Three Thousand years and Ten Thousand miles later, the statue of Aphroditie (or Venus) is stolen from The Metropolitan Museum in New York City. The criminals (The Count and Braddle) are being pursued by the police, so they decide to stash the statue in the Greek Themed garden of a Manhattan nightclub - The Delphi.
Meanwhile, best friends Lee and James are dancing inside the club with their dates, Ada and Bella (Swing). Lee thinks this is a dance lesson for his upcoming wedding, however James set him up with Ada only to get a date with her sister Bella. Ada make overt passes at Lee (Slow Dance) so he leaves the dance floor and goes outside to the garden. There he tells Ada that he is engaged and madly in love with Tillie, his fiancée (I Hear Trumpets Blow)
Lee shows Ada the ring and she remarks on how it probably needs to be resized. Lee shows her that it will fit Tillie fine by placing it on the finger of the statue of Venus. Lee cannot remove the ring from the statue, so he and Ada head back inside for help. When he returns, the statue is gone and Lee, The Count and Braddle all wonder where it could be.
After reporting the ring stolen to the cops, Lee returns home forlorn. Awoken from her imprisonment, Venus knocks on his door telling Lee that she accepts his gift and will take him back to Olympus and crush anyone who stands in her way (Creatures Of The Night).
Kocking on Lee’s door next is Detective Vargas, who is searching for the stolen statue. Lee hides Venus from him and the Detective leaves, but insinuates that he suspects Lee. Lee falls asleep exhausted from events of the last few hours.
Lee awakes to a Skype call from Tillie and they express their love and devotion to each (No Olympian Heights). Lee then manages to convince Venus to wait for him in his apartment, so he can go downstairs to his Hair Salon to work. He sits her down in front of his computer, where she can see him via the security cameras.
Inside Lee’s Salon, the patrons sing of life in modern times and text away while getting worked on (OMG).
Tillie surprises Lee, by arriving at the Hair Salon at the end of the day. He is worried Venus will see them on his security camera and awkwardly gets Tillie to leave, promising to meet her later that night. Venus warns Lee again that she will crush anyone who stands between herself and the object of her desire (Be Bold).
Having seen Lee at work, Venus demands he give her a more modern look. He relents in return for permission to let him go out alone later that night. After Venus’ make over, Lee introduces Venus to the television and he heads out to meet Tillie. Venus, educated by the TV, decides to go out and get some new clothes (Shopping Spree).
Lee meets Tillie at the bar where she is intensely watching the Giants football game (A Ball Song). Soon after, Lee is “escorted” out of the bar by Braddle and The Count. They threaten him and demand he return the statue (Ode To The Crooked Road). Lee tells them they can pick it up later tonight at his shop and the crooks leave. Tillie finds Lee outside and she reminds him that tomorrow is the night of the important dinner party where he is supposed to meet her disapproving Grandmother.
The next day, Lee seeks some advice from one of his customers, Professor Freemoult, who is an expert in Greek and Roman mythology (Oh, My Goddess).
End of Act One.
Act Two opens on Prometheus, Atlas & Sisyphus recapping the struggles of Lee. Mercury arrives to inform them that if Lee is able to free himself from Venus’ desire, Zeus will free them from their torturous imprisonment. (Venus’ Romp)
Braddle and The Count arrive at Lee’s Salon and discover Venus. She defends herself and the criminals and the Salon both take a beating. Detective Vargas and the police arrive at the scene. Although the crooks are found, Vargas is still trying to recover the stolen statue and Lee is still suspect #1. After the police leave, Venus confides in Lee that she needs his love to be freed forever from the statue imprisonment. (No Olympian Heights Reprise).
Lee goes to the dinner party to meet Tillie’s Grandmother who is very disappointed that her daughter has lowered herself to marry a hairdresser. However, Lee tries to stand up for himself against Grandma's berating (Best Damn Hairdresser). James and Bella then arrive at the party and reveal the "double date" Lee had with Ada the other night. The party is then interrupted by Venus, who appears on the terrace of the 19th floor apartment, angry and threatening to crush them all. Lee quickly decides to flee with Venus to keep her from hurting anyone.
Tillie, who noticed this "other woman" was wearing her engagement ring, is distraught and tries to gather her thoughts (Nobody Knows What Going On In My Mind But Me).
Back at Lee's apartment, Venus tells Lee that he has one day to prepare and then she is taking him to Mount Olympus with her. Lee cannot find a way out and heads back to the garden at the Delphi, where it all began, to clear his head (Crazy Bones).
Ada goes to Tillie’s apartment to explain the “sexy” dance lesson, but Tillie thinks she is the one who flew in the apartment terrance the night before. Ada assures her she is not and although she did try to come on to Lee, she was denied and that Lee is truly, madly, deeply in love with her (Made For Each Other).
Lee and Tillie are happily reunited at the Delphi garden (Only In My Dreams). Venus finds them and is about to crush them, when they declare their love for each other and willingness to die for each other if necessary. Venus is touched and begins to see what true love is really all about. She gives the ring back to Lee and Tillie and goes back to Mount Olympus to face Zeus.
At their wedding, Lee and Tille have their first dance (Sweetly To You) and then kick the party into high gear (Swing) with the band (Prometheus, Atlas & Sisyphus) leading the company in celebration.
